Reusswald Casino, the casino on the mezzanine
It is a room of the hotel itself, half a turn up the main staircase from the hall, and you never have to step back out to the promenade to get there.
Where it is and how you get there
Come in under the glass canopy, cross the hall and take the main stair. It turns once, and at the head of that first flight a pair of panelled double doors opens onto the mezzanine. From the front door to the casino takes about twenty seconds. The old lift does it in one stop, and the attendant will work the brass gate if you'd prefer not to pull it yourself.
The floor sits inside the building, between the ground floor and the first, so guests staying here reach the casino in indoor shoes and without a coat. It has no street entrance of its own and no other address, and everything on this page takes place on the hotel's own premises.
Small, quiet, and open in the evening only
The casino is a few tables and a bar. The room was the house's billiard room until 1964, and it still has its coffered ceiling and two chandeliers, while one corner of the parquet creaks. With thirty-odd people it feels busy, and at forty it is full.
Doors open at 19:00 and the last table closes at 02:00, or at 01:00 from Sunday to Thursday. The casino does not run during the day, so until the evening the mezzanine is just a landing with a few chairs on it. Entry is free and there is no membership.
The bar pours the same Swiss wines as the Messing Bar downstairs, along with coffee and soft drinks, and it stays open as long as the room does. Water comes to the tables without anyone asking.
Age, identification and what to wear
-
Eighteen and over
The legal age for gaming in Switzerland is 18. Anyone younger is turned away from the casino, whether they want the tables or the bar at the far end of the room.
-
Photo ID every visit
A passport, a national identity card or a Swiss driving licence is checked at the door each time you come in. Hotel guests are checked as well, even after a week's stay, and no list lets anyone skip it.
-
Dress
After 19:00 we ask for a jacket or a collared shirt, and sportswear, beachwear, sandals and caps indoors are left outside. Daywear is fine at the bar before eight on a weekday, and the doorman will lend you a jacket if you arrive without one.
Limits, breaks and leaving
Limits are set on the floor by the staff on duty, table by table and evening by evening. They aren't printed anywhere, they change from night to night, and they can be adjusted while a table is running, so ask the inspector or the supervisor before you sit down and you'll be told exactly where that table stands.
You can ask the staff to hold you to a limit of your own, too. Tell the supervisor your ceiling or how long you want to stay, and the floor will keep to it and remind you when you get there. A break works the same way: say so, and you'll be shown out to the landing and left in peace until you come back.
Self-exclusion
Self-exclusion is arranged in person at reception on the ground floor, at any hour. Ask for the duty manager, give your name and show identification, and the entry is made while you wait. It is confidential and kept by the hotel, and from that moment the door staff will not admit you to the casino. It can only be made for yourself.
No credit is given here, and there is no cash machine on the mezzanine or anywhere else in the building. Staff cannot lend or advance money, hold it for you, or take a note to be settled later.

The mezzanine in short
| Where | Mezzanine floor, half a turn up the main stair from the hall, or one stop in the lift |
|---|---|
| Open | 19:00 to 02:00 Friday and Saturday, 19:00 to 01:00 Sunday to Thursday |
| Size | A few tables and a bar; about forty people fill the room |
| Age | 18 and over, photo identification checked at the door on every visit |
| Dress | Jacket or collared shirt after 19:00; sportswear and beachwear not worn |
| Limits | Set on the floor by staff; ask the supervisor before sitting down |
| Self-exclusion | In person at reception, ground floor, at any hour |
| Online | None: the website offers no games, bets, deposits or payments |
Photography is not allowed on the mezzanine and telephones stay in the pocket, so the room is quieter than you might expect. Guests who want nothing to do with it are never taken through it, since the lift and the upper stair both bypass the doors.
